At that time, in the eastern direction, there was a world named Light and Purity, where there were eight thousand great Brahmā heaven kings, the first of whom was named Pure Karma; each had a retinue of hundreds of thousands. Each of the other directions also had such numbers. In this world, the king of the Śuddhāvāsa Heaven, named Pure Will, likewise along with his retinue of hundreds of thousands of beings, all came before the Buddha, paid homage to the Buddha, and after circumambulating him three times, withdrew and stood upright. He addressed the Buddha, saying: "World-Honoured One! Today we dwell in the ocean of afflictions and abide in the river of saṃsāra. Although we wish to cross over, we have no sturdy boat or raft; losing our lives midstream, we return again to this shore. Revolving in this manner, there is never a time of emergence. The World-Honoured One, with great compassion, rescues all; we pray you grant the six ships to cross over perils and difficulties. Once we have crossed over, we will also instruct all sentient beings, causing them to attain emancipation, propagating [the teaching] without interruption in future evil ages."
