1. Characteristics of a Kalyāṇamitra. Chapter forty-four of the *Bodhisattvabhūmi* states: It should be known that when a bodhisattva accomplishes eight factors, they can act as a kalyāṇamitra whose myriad marks are complete. First is abiding in the precepts, being unpierced and undeficient in all disciplines. Second is erudition, being accomplished in discriminative wisdom. Third is complete realization, having attained any supreme wholesome state produced by cultivation and having arrived at tranquility and insight (śamatha and vipaśyanā). Fourth is pity, inwardly endowed with loving-kindness and compassion, able to renounce their own dwelling in bliss in the present life, and tirelessly benefiting others with diligence. Fifth is fearlessness, when preaching the authentic Dharma teachings to others, not losing mindfulness or eloquence due to terror. Sixth is patient endurance, being able to endure when mocked by others, subject to vulgar teasing words, defiance, rejective matters, unpleasing ways of speaking, and various evil deeds. Seventh is tirelessness, possessing robust strength, able to engage in abundant reflection, and preaching the Dharma in assemblies without halting speech and without weariness of mind. Eighth is skillful expression, complete in linguistic faculties, not undermining the Dharma nature, distinct and clear in words and expressions, performing the duties of a kalyāṇamitra.
