The *Bodhisattvabhūmi* states: If bodhisattvas possess five characteristics, corresponding to manifold virtues, they can act as kalyāṇamitras whose deeds are not in vain: first, they initially seek to bring benefit, peace, and bliss to others; second, they know that benefit, peace, and bliss as it truly is, without inverted perception; third, they possess skill in means for their sake, preaching the Dharma in accord with proper manner, matching the capacity of the assembly, having competence and power in tasks of taming; fourth, their mind of benefiting others knows no weariness; fifth, they are endowed with equal great compassion, their minds without bias toward the inferior, middling, or superior classes of sentient beings. If bodhisattvas accomplish five characteristics, they make the nature of a kalyāṇamitra a basis of faith, causing others who hear from afar to generate supreme pure faith, not to mention those who see them in person: first is excellence, their deportment being complete and tranquil, all bodily parts being endowed [therewith] without restlessness; second is gravity and solemnity, the active manifestations of their three karmic modes being without agitation or disturbance; third is honesty, not deliberately fabricating and displaying a severe deportment in order to deceive others; fourth is absence of jealousy, never being unable to endure the gain, support, and respect received by others, but rather constantly requesting them to speak and subsequently encouraging others to extend widespread respect toward them; free from hypocrisy, upon seeing others preaching the Dharma and receiving profit and respect, they deeply rejoice as if it were what they themselves had attained; fifth is frugality, storing little and relinquishing as appropriate.
