A bodhisattva should receive and protect the true Dharma for five reasons: first, to repay the kindness of the Buddhas; second, to cause the Dharma to abide long; third, to make offerings to the Buddhas with the supreme offering; fourth, to benefit immeasurable sentient beings; fifth, because the true Dharma is supremely difficult to encounter. Fascicle seventy of the *Yogācārabhūmi* states: Due to three faults, one cannot hear the true Dharma without error: first, distraction; second, foolishness; third, lack of respect. There are five marks that make one a vessel for hearing and cultivation: first, a humble mind; second, a mind of practicing according to instruction; third, a mind of grasping the meaning; fourth, a mind of skillfully grasping the meaning; fifth, a respectful mind.
