The *Mañjuśrīparipṛcchā-prajñāpāramitāsūtra* states: At six times one should make no sound: when paying homage to the Buddha, when listening to the Dharma, when the Saṅgha gathers in harmony, when eating, while actually dining, and when defecating or urinating. Why? Because the devas have pure minds to hear the Dharma; on account of that sound, their minds cannot attain concentration, so the devas return to heaven, and evil spirits arrive to cause disadvantageous harm.
