九明退緣者，《瑜伽論》云：「有四因緣，能令菩薩退菩提心。一種姓不具；二惡友所攝；三於諸眾生悲心微薄；四於長時生死大苦、難行苦行怯畏驚怖。」

Ninth, in clarifying the conditions for regression, the Yogācārabhūmi-śāstra states: "There are four causes and conditions that can cause a bodhisattva to regress from the bodhimind: first, having incomplete lineage (gotra); second, being influenced by bad friends; third, having weak compassion toward sentient beings; fourth, being cowardly, fearful, and alarmed by the great suffering of prolonged saṃsāra and the difficult austerities."
