6. Neither deficiency nor excess: As stated in the Saṃdhinirmocana-sūtra, the Yogācārabhūmi-śāstra, and so forth: "'World-Honoured One! For what cause and condition has such a scope of training been posited as having only the number six?' 'Good son! It is due to two causes and conditions. First, it is to benefit sentient beings. One should know that the first three are: bodhisattvas, by means of giving, gather material provisions and benefit sentient beings; by means of keeping the precepts, they do not commit harm and the like, thereby benefiting sentient beings; and by means of forbearance, they are able to endure such harm and the like, thereby benefiting sentient beings. Second, it is to counteract all afflictions. One should know that the latter three are: bodhisattvas, by means of vigor, although not yet having permanently subdued all afflictions and the like, are able to courageously cultivate all wholesome factors, so that those afflictions cannot shake their preparatory applications toward wholesome factors; by means of meditative absorption, they permanently subdue the afflictions; and by means of wisdom, they permanently destroy the latent tendencies.' It is due to these six types that there is neither deficiency nor excess."
