四、約殊勝門。即以三中大乘為一乘，以望別教雖權實有異，同是菩薩所乘故，故經云「唯此一事實，餘二則非真」，又云「止息故說二」等。此文有二意：一若望上別教，餘二者則大小二乘也，以聲聞等利鈍雖殊，同期小果故，開一異三故。若望同教，即聲聞等為二也。又融大同一故。

Fourth, by reference to the gate of superiority. That is, taking the Mahāyāna among the three to be the One Vehicle: when viewed in relation to the distinct teaching, although they differ as expedient and real, they are both that which is ridden by bodhisattvas. Therefore the sūtra says: "Only this one thing is real; the other two are not true," and it also says: "To provide rest, two were taught," and so forth. This text has two meanings: first, if viewed in relation to the distinct teaching above, "the other two" are the Mahāyāna and Hīnayāna, because although śrāvakas and [pratyekabuddhas] differ in sharp and dull faculties, they equally anticipate the lesser fruition, and thus opening the one sets it apart from the three. If viewed in relation to the common teaching, then the śrāvaka and [pratyekabuddha] constitute the two, and also because the Mahāyāna is fused into identity with the one.
