二者，大乘、中乘、小乘為三乘。此有三義：一則融一乘同大乘，合愚法同小乘，故唯三也。教理可知，此約一乘辨。二則大乘中自有三乘，如上所說。三則小乘中亦有三，如小論中自有聲聞法、緣覺法及佛法。此中佛法但慈悲愛行等，異於二乘故也。

Second, the Mahāyāna, the Mid-Vehicle, and the Hīnayāna constitute the three vehicles. This has three meanings: First, fusing the One Vehicle into identity with the Mahāyāna, and combining those who cling to the teaching into identity with the Hīnayāna, there are thus only three. Teaching and principle can be known; this is explained by reference to the One Vehicle. Second, within the Mahāyāna there are naturally three vehicles, as explained above. Third, within the Hīnayāna there are also three, just as within Hīnayāna treatises there are naturally the śrāvaka teaching, the pratyekabuddha teaching, and the Buddha teaching. Here the Buddha teaching is only loving-kindness, compassion, beloved conduct, and so on, which differ from the two vehicles.
