9. According to Master Yun of Guangzhai Monastery under the Liang dynasty, he established four vehicles of teachings, maintaining that the three carts outside the gate are the Three Vehicles, while the great white bullock cart given at the crossroads is the fourth. Since that bullock cart at the gate is just like the goat and deer [carts], none of which are attained, the remaining points are as explained above. Dhyāna Master Xinxing established two teachings based on this tenet, namely the One Vehicle and the Three Vehicles. The Three Vehicles are the distinct understandings and distinct practices, the distinctions among the Three Vehicles, and first training in the Hīnayāna and later proceeding to the Mahāyāna. The One Vehicle refers to universal understanding and universal practice, being purely the One Vehicle, which is also the Avataṃsaka doctrinal approach, the direct-advancing [bodhisattvas], and so forth.
