The first refers to the distinct teaching of the One Vehicle: when the Buddha first attained enlightenment, during the second seven days under the Bodhi tree, just as the rising sun first illuminates the high mountains, within the ocean-seal samādhi he simultaneously expounded the tenfold-tenfold Dharma-gates, complete with master and companion, unimpeded and perfectly penetrating, encompassing nine times and ten times, exhausting the subtle realms of Indra. At that very time, all Dharma-gates of causes and effects, principles and phenomena, and all former and later events, down to the affairs of the later ages such as the circulation of relics, seeing and hearing, were all simultaneously manifested. Why is this? Because contracting and expanding are unimpeded. Expanding, it encompasses nine times; contracting, it resides in a single moment. This contracting is precisely expanding, and expanding is again precisely contracting. Why is this? Because they share the same dependent origination and lack dual characteristics. The sūtra text says: 'Within a single dust mote, establishing all the Buddha's works of the three times,' and so forth. It also says: 'Within a single thought, performing the eight phases of attaining enlightenment, down to nirvāṇa and the circulation of relics,' and so on, extensively as expounded in the sūtra. Therefore, based on this, all Buddha-dharmas universally heard were both expounded sequentially at one time, and expounded at one time sequentially, in the second seven days. Just as with the worldly method of printing: when reading the text, sentences and meanings are sequential, but when printed, it manifests simultaneously; being simultaneously sequential, the principles do not contradict one another. One should know that the principle here is also like this; consider it accordingly.
