According to the One Vehicle, there are as many marks as dust motes in ten Lotus-Store ocean worlds, and both kinds of marks pervade the dharmadhātu; their karmic functions are also like this. The reason ten is stated is to reveal infinity, as taught in the "Ocean of Marks" chapter. Furthermore, in the Guanfo sanmei jing, in terms of the tenets of the Three Vehicles, the buddha's marks and secondary characteristics are divided into three sections; thus that sūtra states: "As for the briefest of the brief: for this assembly gathered at this time and for King Śuddhodana, I now briefly explain the marks and secondary characteristics. A buddha is born in the human realm and displays conformity with human affairs; to conform with human marks, I explain thirty-two marks; because he excels all devas, I explain eighty secondary characteristics. For the bodhisattvas, I explain the eighty-four thousand wondrous marks and secondary characteristics, which are the buddha's real marks and secondary characteristics. When I first attained enlightenment at the site of peaceful extinction in the country of Magadha, I already extensively distinguished them in the Zahua jing for Samantabhadra, Bhadraśrī, and other great bodhisattvas." The explanation is: here, the thirty-two marks and so forth correspond to the briefest of the brief. Addressed to humans, devas, the two vehicles, and so forth, this corresponds to the first. The eighty-four thousand and so forth correspond in meaning to being merely brief. Addressed to bodhisattvas of the Three Vehicles and so forth, this corresponds to the second. The buddha's real marks and secondary characteristics as taught in the Zahua correspond in meaning to the extensive explanation; that is, referring to what is taught in this Avataṃsaka's "Ocean of Marks" chapter; this is the characteristic of the distinct teaching of the One Vehicle, which corresponds to the final, because Zahua is itself the Avataṃsaka. The remaining points can be understood from this.
