Third, according to the One Vehicle, there are two explanations: First, it includes the gotras clarified in the preceding teachings, all being complete and functioning as host and companion to form the tenets, because it is the common teaching and includes upāya. Second, based on the distinct teaching, gotra is extremely profound, cause and fruition are non-dual, it pervades the dependent and proper [rewards], exhausts the three realms, encompasses all dharma-gates such as principle, phenomena, understanding, and practice, and is originally fulfilled and already accomplished. Therefore the Great Sūtra says: 'The bodhisattva gotra is extremely profound, vast, and great, equal to the dharma realm and empty space.' This is what it refers to. If manifested according to specific gates, within the five stages, the six definitive meanings in each and every stage are named gotra. This dharma is also named the fruition characteristic, because cause and fruition share the same substance and are solely of one nature. It is as the sūtra extensively explains. The rest may be inferred accordingly.
