First, revealed in terms of provisional assignment of stages: namely, starting from the ten faiths up to the buddha stage, the six stages are distinct; yet upon attaining any one stage, one attains all stages. Why? Because they are subsumed by the six characteristics, because of host and companion, because of mutual interpenetration, because of mutual identity, and because of perfect harmony. The sūtra says: "Abiding in a single stage, one universally gathers the merits of all stages." Therefore, in the sūtra, that one attains all stages and the buddha stage at the superior progress portion of the fulfillment of the ten faiths is just this matter. Furthermore, because the various stages, the buddha stage, and so on are mutually identical, cause and effect are non-dual, beginning and end are unobstructed, and at each and every stage one is immediately a bodhisattva and immediately a buddha—this is the meaning.
