4.54

Tenth is the approach of relying on things to manifest dharmas and generate understanding. The meanings above rely on diverse things according to the occasion to individually manifest distinct dharmas—that is to say, all teaching approaches of principles, phenomena, and so forth. Just as the phenomena like the ten kinds of precious-jewel-king clouds are expounded in this sūtra, these are precisely the various teaching approaches. To manifest that the above meanings are precious, a jewel is established to represent them; to manifest that the above meanings are sovereign, a king is designated to represent them; to manifest that the above meanings moisten and benefit, enrich and nourish, and spread abundantly, they are designated by clouds. Such matters are immeasurably numerous, as should be contemplated according to the sūtra. Question: 'Since this meaning also exists in the Three Vehicles, what is the difference with this?' Answer: 'The Three Vehicles rely on distinct phenomena to represent and manifest distinct principles; now, the phenomena relied upon in this One Vehicle are themselves the very principles manifested, without any difference. They are fully endowed with all principles, phenomena, teachings, meanings, and the above teaching approaches, leaving none ungathered. One should properly reflect on this.'
