Second, regarding benefits: If one relies on the Hīnayāna, the Tathāgata's vocal sounds do not necessarily all have benefit, as when the Buddha asked Ānanda about rain from the sky and the like, which are not subsumed under the sounds of the wheel of Dharma. If in the Mahāyāna and the like, none of the worldly vocal sounds emitted by the Tathāgata fails to accomplish great benefit; as when the Buddha entered the city chanting the call for almsfood, causing the whole city to hear it together and all obtain benefit. Thus the sūtra says: 'The sounds, speech, deportment, moving, and resting of all Buddhas are nothing other than Buddha-work.'
