Third, specifying the causes: There are four. The first is the illuminating cause (jñāpaka-hetu), because it illuminates and manifests the fundamentally existent dharma of tathatā. The second is the productive cause (kāraka-hetu), because it generates and brings forth through cultivation supreme qualities. The third is the unobstructed cause of generation and illumination, because generation and illumination are mutually identical, and the two fruits are not different. The fourth is taking all these supreme qualities as the basis-cause, with the manifestation of functions in imprint to capacities being the resulting fruit.
