Second, distinguishing defilement and purity: seeing the arising, cessation, existence, and non-existence of the dust mote is defilement; its essence being unarisen, unceasing, neither existing nor non-existing is purity. If emptiness were different from existence, then purity could not be called purity, because of delusion regarding emptiness; if existence were different from emptiness, then defilement could not be called defilement, because of grasping onto existence. Now, existence is entirely emptiness, which is then called the defiled aspect; emptiness is entirely existence, which is then called the pure aspect. Because emptiness and existence are unobstructed, defilement and purity are completely unhindered. A sūtra states: "Defiled and yet not defiled; undefiled and yet defiled."
