Third, "cultivating understanding and practice": at the dust mote, awakening to and penetrating the meanings of principle and phenomena, and of form and emptiness being without intrinsic nature, is understanding. The understanding of principle being in the mind is wisdom. Free penetration of practice is practice. If the practicing mind forms an understanding of the true or forms an understanding of the conventional, it is not called understanding; not forming any understanding, with the understanding mind having nothing to rely on, is great understanding. Furthermore, if one arouses the mind to perform the practices of ordinary beings or perform the practices of sages, this is also not practice; not performing any practice, with the practicing mind having nothing to rely on, is called great practice. Practice is not an error; [error] arises from the mind producing activity. Understanding is also not an error; [error] arises from the mind dwelling in attachment. Being constantly free of dwelling, attachment, and expectation is true understanding and practice.
