Fifth, demonstrating the complete sound: this refers to the sound that explains this dust mote. This sound is fully endowed with the store of wisdom, evoking deep or shallow responses according to the capacities of sentient beings. If in sound one comprehends that large and small sounds and tones are provisionally established because they are empty and non-existent, yet sound is real—this is the capacity of the Hīnayāna, through which the teaching of those ignorant of phenomena is manifested. If in sound one immediately knows that the phenomenon of sound has no essence, gathering phenomena to reveal principle—this is due to the capacity of the Mahāyāna, through which the final teaching is manifested. If in sound one immediately knows that large and small sounds are empty and non-existent, that giving rise to mind and stirring thoughts immediately violates the essence of phenomena, and that the single flavor and single mark cannot be conceptualized—this is the capacity of the Mahāyāna, through which the sudden teaching is manifested. If in sound one fully understands that sound is the pratītyasamutpāda-dharmadhātu, where bodhi and nirvāṇa, host and companion, are unconstrained, one is all and all is one, like the realm of Indra's palace jeweled net, infinitely layered—this is due to the capacity of the ekayāna, through which the complete teaching is manifested. In this single sound, because capacities are large and small, this Dharma gate is likewise not singular. All sounds are each like this; this is the Tathāgata's unobstructed complete sound, with the wheel of the Dharma constantly turning.
