First is the cessation of illuminating dharmas as pure and void, separated from conditions. This means that dharmas of the ultimate truth are by original nature empty and quiescent, while dharmas of the conventional truth are empty even as they seem to exist. The ultimate and the conventional are pure and void, solitary without support; the cognizing wisdom is quiescent, and the cognized object is empty. Mind and object are unconstrained, and the essence blends into vast openness; at the moment of correct realization, causes and conditions are both departed from. The Vimalakīrti Sūtra says: 'Dharmas do not belong to causes, because they do not reside in conditions.' Relying on this principle, it is called the cessation of illuminating dharmas as pure and void, separated from conditions.
