If one thoroughly understands the profound net of the marvelous contemplation, why need one participate in Chan and inquire about the Way? This gāthā praises Chan Master Dixin's compiling the purport of this contemplation, condensing the profound essentials of the *Avataṃsaka* into threefold [layers], and establishing the marvelous gates of the dharmadhātu to integrate them into a single contemplation—beyond what various sūtras can measure through explanation, and beyond what the Chan lineage's presentations can reach. Although Old Shen's words are direct and cutting, they are difficult to compare to the universal interfusion and unobstructedness. Ah! I once heard a saying: "If someone understands the contemplation of the dharmadhātu, in participating in Chan he has completed half [the work]." I, Congzhan, judging by this, would say: If you deeply understand Dushun's purport, it is fine to drink Zhaozhou's tea. Why so? In the past, a monk came to Zhaozhou. Zhaozhou said: "Have you ever been here before?" The monk said: "I have." Zhaozhou said: "Go drink tea." Later another monk came, and he also said: "Have you ever been here before?" The monk said: "I have not." Zhaozhou said: "Go drink tea." The monastic director asked Zhaozhou: "To the one who had been here, you told him to go drink tea; to the one who had not been here, you also told him to go drink tea. What was your venerable intention?" Zhaozhou called the director; the director answered, and Zhaozhou said: "Go drink tea." Virtuous ones! See how that ancient Buddha Zhaozhou, although he was accustomed to using this one dynamic to his convenience, nevertheless within a single bowl of tea universally received the three capacities, causing all quarters to nod in agreement. Only Yimen—why did he say, "Why need Zhaozhou's tea"? If you can examine and realize it, you will then see the dust of the profound and marvelous swept away and the flavor of the Buddha-dharma completely spat out. If you have not yet investigated the profound lineage, you must carefully refine yourself and investigate the teachings; only when both doctrine and lineage are thoroughly penetrated is it the wisdom of universal interfusion and unobstructedness.
