The Record of Zhen states: As for "its meaning corresponds to the round teaching," there are the distinct teaching of the three vehicles and the shared teaching of the three vehicles, the shared teaching of the One Vehicle and the distinct teaching of the One Vehicle, and there is the round teaching of the One Vehicle. If discussed in terms of a multistoried pavilion: internally adorning the One Vehicle while externally embellishing the gate of the three vehicles constitutes the shared teaching. As for the so-called 'gate', because it connects internal and external, though the interior is the One Vehicle, within the gate is the shared teaching One Vehicle. Furthermore, this shared teaching, in terms of the three vehicles and above, is the distinct teaching, because the One Vehicle can also be regarded as the distinct teaching in terms of what is designated. Question: The three vehicles designated here correspond to the outside and are the embellishment of the three vehicles; why call it the distinct teaching One Vehicle? Answer: The three vehicles that flow out and are designated within this sūtra fully contain two meanings: first, causing lower faculties to suppose that it is identical to their own teaching; second, causing them to understand that the teaching they themselves have attained is entirely the vast space of the Avataṃsaka. In terms of the first meaning, it corresponds to the outside of the gate, and hence belongs to the three vehicles as an external embellishment; in terms of the second meaning, it corresponds to the inside of the gate, and hence belongs to the One Vehicle as an internal adornment. Here, in terms of the second meaning, what is designated is taken as the shared teaching One Vehicle, and even named the distinct teaching One Vehicle. Taking strictly what is inside the multistoried pavilion constitutes the intrinsic distinct teaching One Vehicle. At the very beginning, one does not see the three vehicles; hence it is called the intrinsic distinct teaching. The round teaching completely treads through the preceding four teachings. Question: If so, how does this differ from the meaning of the harmonious union of the one and the three in that shared teaching? Answer: Harmonious union wishing to guide lower faculties is the shared teaching. Treading through them comprehensively to serve as one's own true merits is the round teaching. Therefore, the ancients said: 'The shared teaching is like the great earth, because it nourishes the grasses and trees of the three vehicles; the distinct teaching is like the great ocean, because it does not harbor the dead corpses of the three vehicles; the round teaching is like empty space, because it is that upon which both rely.'
