The Great Record says: The universal characteristic is the fundamental seal, the particular characteristic is the remaining bends, and the particulars rely upon the seal and complete that seal: the fundamental seal is the universal apart from particulars, and completing that seal is the universal bearing particulars. However, although there are two meanings, there are not two universals; what is called universal has no particulars to be opposed to, hence it is said to be "apart from particulars." Yet, as this universal apart from particulars is gathered from particulars to be accomplished, it is said to "bear particulars." Unfolding particulars based on the universal, there are fractional unfolding and complete unfolding; hence in terms of the meaning of complete unfolding it is said to "complete that seal." Question: If so, since outside particulars there is no further original universal, why speak of relying on the seal and completing the seal? Answer: Speaking in terms of reality, one should not speak of relying on the seal or completing the seal; yet, wishing to cause understanding [of how] the boundless reaches the place where they do not know one another, one provisionally distinguishes active and passive to speak thus. "The identical characteristic is the seal": because although each of the various bends is distinct, they are identically the round seal. Identity has two meanings: identical due to equality, and identical due to oneness. Identical due to equality: because it is the identical characteristic in the enumeration of the six characteristics, the efficacy and meaning of the various conditions in relation to one another are identical. Identical due to oneness: a single condition of the identical characteristic completely subsumes the various conditions, which is precisely the universal. "The distinct characteristic is the augmenting characteristic": because the initial bend and the next bend are each distinct, augmenting in number. Augmenting has two meanings: inward-facing augmentation and outward-facing augmentation. The various conditions identical to the universal not being identical to one another is inward-facing augmentation; the various conditions harmoniously interpenetrating one another not being identical to one another is outward-facing augmentation. "The integrating characteristic is the brief explanation": it means the various bends combine to form a single seal. When it comes to the ultimate point of the various conditions, stating merely a single condition is precisely the universal, hence it is called a "brief explanation." "The disintegrating characteristic is the extensive explanation": because the various bends each abide in their original non-action; comprehensively investigating the various conditions so as to bring them to the place of non-increase, non-decrease, and self-so-ness, it is called an "extensive explanation."
