Zhen's Record says: The two lines "Within one is all," and so forth, manifest anew the meaning of the substance of pratītyasamutpāda forming in accordance with conditions, making it clear. The first line is the gateway of the principle of cause and effect, meaning that when one is obtained, ten is definitely obtained; when ten is obtained, one is definitely obtained; when cause is obtained, fruit is immediately obtained; when fruit is obtained, cause is immediately obtained. The ten conditions are the cause, and the accomplished one is the fruit; this cause and fruit do not move from their two positions within the identical time, so it is called the gateway of the principle of cause and effect. The next line is the gateway of the unhinderedness of virtuous functioning, meaning that this is precisely that, and that is precisely this, unobstructed and without boundary; therefore, it is called the gateway of the unhinderedness of virtuous functioning and the gateway of moving positions. Question: The previous one was the gateway of within [zhong-men], and therefore had the gateway of possessing force and lacking force; this one is the gateway of identity [ji-men], and therefore has the gateway of possessing substance and lacking substance. Why is it called functioning? Answer: This is simply calling the meaning of the immediate identity of cause and fruit in the very substance of cause and conditions "functioning"; it is not the functioning of force and function. Question: In "within one is all," the ten conditions are the cause and the accomplished one is the fruit; if so, do that which accomplishes and that which is accomplished combine to make eleven? Answer: Within a single condition, in terms of its facing others, it is the cause that can accomplish; in terms of its absolute transcendence, it is the accomplished fruit. However, these two meanings are not two, and therefore they do not make eleven.
