The Great Record says: Below "Within one is all," wishing to manifest the meanings of the principle of cause and effect and the unhinderedness of virtuous functioning within the great pratītyasamutpāda, these two lines are therefore present. Master Chongye said: The three vehicles also have this meaning. That is to say, in the initial teaching, the seeds of the three natures within the ālayavijñāna share the same indeterminate nature with the substance of the fundamental consciousness. The explanation says: The meaning of being formed through perfuming within the substance of the fundamental consciousness is the gateway of substance, and also the meaning of the unhinderedness of virtuous functioning. The seeds of the three natures differing according to that which perfumes is the gateway of force, and the meaning of the principle of cause and effect. In the advanced teaching, the substance of the tathāgatagarbha is the meaning of the unhinderedness of virtuous functioning. Whether arising or ceasing, because it is functioning, it is the meaning of the principle of cause and effect. In the One Vehicle, because causes are distinguished according to phenomena, whichever single phenomenon is brought up among the ten universal phenomena, it possesses both substance and function; substance is the unhinderedness of virtuous functioning, and function is the principle of cause and effect.
