The Ancient Record says: Regarding "entering" and "identity," the names established by various masters are not one. That is, some say the gateway of within [zhong-men] and the gateway of identity [ji-men]; some say mutual entering and mutual identity; some say mutual residing and mutual being; some say mutual aiding and mutual subsuming; some say the meaning of mutual reliance and support through possessing force and lacking force, and the meaning of mutual contest and elimination through possessing substance and lacking substance. Furthermore, the ancients said: The gateway of within is like the light of lamps mutually entering; thus, it is merely that the functions of the lamps mutually enter. The gateway of identity is like waves and water mutually gathering; thus, the wave-substance and water-substance are undeniably mutually identical.
