The Chapter on the Daoshen says: Question: The west-wind wave is not the east-wind wave, and the east-wind wave is not the west-wind wave; it is only in terms of the non-duality of the water substance of the two waves that one can speak of the gateway of identity, so in terms of the two waves themselves one cannot attain the gateway of identity. If so, one can only speak of the gateway of identity in terms of the non-duality of the principle-substance of this event and that event; how can one discuss mutual identity without eliminating the two events? Answer: If the two winds are released, the water has no two waves. Since there are no two waves, what would be identical to what? Since this is precisely that, one can know that mutual identity is discussed without eliminating the two waves; mutual identity is not discussed in terms of the principle-substance. Here, the water of this wave and the water of that wave have one [...] substance; therefore, although the waves are endless, saying that their substance is identical is merely the meaning of the three vehicles. If it were not for this wave, there would be no that wave; if it were not for that wave, there would be no this wave—this is the gateway of within. Because this wave has no self-nature, it exists in that wave; because that wave has no self-nature, it exists in this wave—that this is the gateway of identity is the One Vehicle.
