Fa's Record says: Regarding "a single dust mote," the initial teaching calls it the atomic dust mote [paramāṇu], the advanced teaching calls it the dust mote bordering on space, and the One Vehicle calls it the dust mote of universal characteristics. This dust mote of universal characteristics, if required to be small, is small; if required to be large, is large; therefore, within a single dust mote, the ten directions suddenly manifest. Question: How does the dust mote with spatial divisions in the lower teachings differ from the dust mote of the One Vehicle? Answer: If the dust mote of the One Vehicle is required to have spatial divisions, it has spatial divisions; if it is required to have no spatial divisions, it has no spatial divisions; because it is unhindered according to need, it is different. Question: Should a dust mote without spatial divisions not be broken down further? Answer: It must also be completely broken down. Why? If it is a lack of spatial divisions conceived by sentient clinging, then it definitely must be analyzed using the six characteristics.
