Fa's Record states: As for 'principle and phenomena' here, saṃsāra has no nature, taking nirvāṇa as its nature; nirvāṇa has no nature, taking saṃsāra as its nature. Thus the lack of nature of saṃsāra and nirvāṇa is principle, and saṃsāra and nirvāṇa devoid of nature are phenomena. Therefore the ancients said: pratītyasamutpāda is without nature, and that which is without nature is pratītyasamutpāda. Pratītyasamutpāda without nature is principle; that which is without nature as pratītyasamutpāda is phenomena. Principle is also the principle of the true nature, and phenomena are also the phenomena of the true nature; hence it is said that they are 'dark and merged without differentiation.' This is the realm of the ten Buddhas and Samantabhadra.
