Qingliang's Yanyi says: The Anuttarāśraya Sūtra states: "Arhats, pratyekabuddhas, and great-stage bodhisattvas are obstructed by four kinds of obstacles, so that they do not attain the four virtues of the Tathāgata's dharmakāya: first, induction by condition of birth; second, delusion as cause of birth; third, possessing existence; fourth, non-existence. What is the delusion as condition of birth? It is the ground of dwelling ignorance producing all conditioned formations, just as ignorance produces karma. What is the delusion as cause of birth? It is the conditioned formations produced by the ground of dwelling ignorance, comparable to the karmas produced by ignorance. What is possessing existence? Conditioned by the ground of dwelling ignorance and caused by the untainted formations arising from the ground of dwelling ignorance, three kinds of mind-made bodies arise. For example, taking the four clingings as condition and the three tainted karmas as cause, three kinds of existence arise. What is the condition of non-existence? The three kinds of mind-made bodies are imperceptible and subtly fall into cessation. For example, conditioned by the three existences, old age and death arise from moment to moment [and so forth]." In the three realms there are four kinds of difficulties: first, the difficulty of afflictions; second, the difficulty of karma; third, the difficulty of birth-retribution; fourth, the difficulty of faults. Birth-and-death through upāya arising from the ground of dwelling ignorance is like the difficulty of afflictions within the three realms. Birth-and-death through causes and conditions arising from the ground of dwelling ignorance is like the difficulty of karma within the three realms. Birth-and-death through possessing existence arising from the ground of dwelling ignorance is like the difficulty of birth-retribution within the three realms. Birth-and-death through non-existence arising from the ground of dwelling ignorance is like the difficulty of faults within the three realms.
