The Ancient Record says: The Venerable of Yunhua said: 'There is a multistoried pavilion whose interior is adorned with the One Vehicle and whose exterior is decorated with the three vehicles. Inside there is a gate named the Gate of Awakening, facing the Bodhi tree. But sentient beings are entangled by false thoughts, which obstruct this gate; because of this, they do not see the precious jewel adornments of the One Vehicle. Therefore, Vasubandhu Bodhisattva used the key of the six characteristics to reveal and open this gate. Yet the people of India did not understand the six characteristics, so he instructed them using the method of the siddham dhāraṇī which they had studied.' (End of quote). The people of the Eastern Land also did not understand the method of the siddham dhāraṇī; therefore, the Venerable of Yunhua instructed them using the method of counting coins which they were accustomed to. Question: Are these analogies of siddham and counting coins found in the sacred teachings or not? Answer: They are indeed present. As for the analogy of siddham, it is spoken in the 'Ten Grounds Chapter'. As for the analogy of the method of counting, the verse spoken by Bodhisattva Vīryasiddhi in the Fourth Assembly states: 'Just as in the method of calculation, / Adding one reaches infinity, / The method of counting has no substantial nature, / Distinct only due to wisdom.' Question: Among these coins, which is the imagined [nature], and which is pratītyasamutpāda? Answer: When the ten coins—the first, the second, up to the tenth—each have their own-nature, so that taking one means there is not one, taking two means there is not two, and so forth: these are the imagined coins. As for the coins of pratītyasamutpāda: because the position of this single coin completely possesses the middle and identical, if there were not the remaining nine, this single coin could not be established; therefore, this single coin is precisely the inexhaustible one.
