The Great Record states: Regarding 'one is one up to: that is, the original number', Question: How is it known that the initial one receives the name of the fundamental dharma? Answer: The dharma of the Buddha's personal realization is free from the designations of one and two. Yet when not maintaining its own nature and forming in accordance with conditions, if one calls out 'one', then the entire dharmadhātu is one. Having assigned positions, one says 'one', 'two', and so on up to 'ten'; therefore it is said that the initial one comes to receive the designation 'name of the fundamental dharma'. Question: Since ten coins are arranged horizontally, whichever I pick up serves as the beginning to count; are all ten therefore the original number? Answer: Only when it is picked up to be the beginning and counted does it become the original number; because it successively receives names such as two and three according to what is picked up, these are derivative numbers. Question: If so, and the Upādhyāya takes one as the original, then how does one resolve the scripture's statement that, as in the method of counting, all ten are the original number? Answer: They are the ten of the one, which is why ten are picked up. Therefore, being the ten of the one, all ten are one; hence it says, 'all are the original number.' Question: If so, it should be that all ten are the original number; why is that not the case? Answer: When assigning their positions, since one says 'two', 'three', and so on, only the initial one is the original number. Yet those ten are the ten of the one; therefore all are the original number.
