The Ancient Record states: Within the One Vehicle, having become a Buddha from the beginning has two meanings: first, the meaning that sentient beings who do not cultivate have already become Buddhas; second, the meaning that the Buddhas who have already become [Buddhas] originally did not cultivate. If one employs the six characteristics, this purport can be obtained: namely, the Buddha is the universal characteristic; sentient beings are the particular characteristic; the meaning that all sentient beings are equal to the Buddha is taken as the identical characteristic; all sentient beings are mutually not identical to each other, which is taken as the distinct characteristic; all sentient beings in the culmination of pratītyasamutpāda being precisely the Buddha is taken as the integrating characteristic; all sentient beings, each abiding in their own position, being from the beginning unmoved, is taken as the disintegrating characteristic.
