As for guarding them in practice, the differences among the schools are fully evident. As the Dharmaguptaka Vinaya states: 'Wherever one travels, robes and bowl accompany one's body, just like the wings of a flying bird.' The Mahāsāṃghika Vinaya states: 'Revere and protect the three robes, viewing them as though they were a stūpa.' The Sarvāstivāda Vinaya forbids carrying dung, bearing wood, and the like while wearing them. In the Vinaya, five circumstances permit setting aside the saṃghāṭī: first, fear of rain; second, fear of danger; third, storing and putting it away; fourth, washing and dyeing; fifth, attending to monastery duties. If one has an emaciating illness such that the robe is heavy and difficult to carry, the Saṃgha conducts a karman to grant an exception, allowing one to be separated from one robe for up to nine months; if even a single condition is missing, this procedure is not permitted.
