Now, the orthodox transformation of the Buddhist order takes the Dharma as its foundation; to cultivate in accordance with the Dharma is like a cart following its tracks. Therefore, even if one has many robes, if one has not received and upheld them through adhiṣṭhāna, there is no offense of separation from the robes; one merely violates deportment, for which there is a separate offense. Hence, essential matters accompanying the Path are all to be consecrated with adhiṣṭhāna. Wearing the Dharma robe covers the exterior; using the patra for food sustains the interior. Failing to uphold them internally and externally both incur offenses; whether in committing an infraction or complying with the Dharma, both are termed 'observance through action.'
