The three items above are essential for sustaining the body. They are not perpetually maintained; rather, when one is ill, they are required. As for the first: medical tools such as lancets and iron implements are generally permitted by the Vinaya texts. Since they are small, fine, and suited to the occasion, by analogy with nasal instillation tubes and the like in the Sarvāstivāda, they are classified as light property. The remaining medicine tubes, medicine boxes, and various containers follow their classification and are distributed accordingly. As for the second: various recipe books and materia medica are mundane practices and should be classified as heavy property. Among the lifetime medicines, those that have not yet been pounded and prepared are classified as heavy. If they have already been pounded and mixed into decoctions, pills, salves, or boiled extracts, thus altering the original characteristics of the medicine, as well as remnants left over after consumption, these are genuinely not luxuries; in accordance with the Mahāsāṃghika, they should be classified as light property and distributed.
