但約之受體，紛諍自銷。今此神州通行四分（關中先用僧祇，江表由來十誦。及行受戒律儀，皆多四分羯磨）。即以此律為本，搜括諸部成文，則何事而不詳？何義而非決？遂刪補舊章，撰述《事鈔》。雖體相諧允文據的明，猶恐意用未周，事須廣流視聽。

However, if one restricts them to the essence of the precepts, contentious disputes naturally melt away. Now, in this Divine Land, the Dharmaguptaka is universally used (formerly the Mahāsāṃghika was used in Guanzhong, and the Sarvāstivāda has long been used in Jiangbiao; yet when administering the ordination rituals, most use the Dharmaguptaka karman). Taking this Vinaya as fundamental, if one searches and gathers the established texts of the various Vinayas, what matter will not be detailed? What meaning will not be decided? Thereupon I pruned and supplemented the old texts and composed the Shichao. Although its forms and marks were harmonious and its textual evidence clear, I still feared its application was not comprehensive, and that it was necessary to circulate it widely for sight and hearing.
