In the fourth year of Zhenguan of the Great Tang, filled with indignation outside the Passes, I traveled in four directions seeking different views. Those who transmitted their opinions mostly combined the Vinayas and recited formulas while clinging to the letter; in Heyang, they relied on commentaries to determine judgements, with multiplying words and trivial talk entangled like colliding chariots. There was Vinaya Master Li of Weijun, who was an eminent talent of the region, composing texts and commentaries, walking alone east of the mountains. I therefore went to attend on him, asking for resolution of my doubts and blockages. Yet he was bound to the text and relied on conceptual matching; his speech was so dense it was ultimately submerged. Scholars clung to phrases waiting for them to melt away, while outside listeners opened the chapters and ceased all thinking. He also found light and heavy property difficult to determine, and separately recorded commentary passages; but the order was confused and redundant, and the affairs and principles mixed and disorderly. This was merely the wisdom of one corner, still not universally applicable for shared practice.
