貞觀初年關表求解，晉魏中原號稱學府，即而請誨，重增昔迷，獨有相州律師。制輕重相，言雖綸綜，還類古蹤。由此意言遂出斯路，皆比擬於成教，絕遲疑於古今。而以王著貴衣，同於俗服；邊方毛皮臥具，類等輕分。此則文義𨷂彰致令處斷斯咎。

In the early years of the Zhenguan reign, I sought understanding outside the passes. Jin and Wei in the Central Plains were renowned as academies of learning; yet when I approached them to request instruction, it only redoubled my former perplexity. There was only the Vinaya Master of Xiangzhou who established the characteristics of light and heavy property. Though his words were well-woven, they still conformed to ancient precedents. Because of this, ideas and statements emerged along this path: all were patterned on established teachings, casting aside all hesitation between past and present. Yet he treated expensive garments worn by kings as identical to worldly clothing; and treated furs and pelts for bedding from peripheral regions as equivalent to light property for distribution. This was due to the texts and principles lacking clarity, which brought about this fault in judgment.
