Second: painted pictures and ornamental calligraphy. (The root Vinaya permits decorating the interior of rooms with embroidery, ornaments, and various colored figures of humans, birds, and beasts. In the Mahāsāṃghika [Vinaya], when monks built rooms and wished to whitewash the walls and paint them with the five colors, the Buddha permitted it all. Only improper images of sexual union are excluded; other images of mountains, forests, humans, and horses are all permitted.)
