Whenever holding the responsibility of appraisal and allocation, the essential pattern for division is: first strike the chime to gather the saṅgha; next collect all the present property; list other heavy and large utensils in ledgers item by item, and read them aloud before the assembly so that what is apparent and hidden is known. First ask about shared property and common livelihood, judging according to credibility; next ask whether there is entrustment, also judging according to circumstances; finally ask who is in debt, and also examine and hand it over. Only after performing these three procedures is the present property determined; the rest is as in the root Shichao.
