The root Vinaya states: At that time, a monk of Śrāvastī who had many acquaintances died. He had many saṅghārāmas; much fields, orchards, and fruit trees belonging to saṅghārāmas; many private rooms; many items belonging to private rooms; many bronze vases, bronze basins, axes, chisels, and lampstands; many heavy items; many rope-beds, wooden beds, sleeping mats, and sitting cushions; and kept many eraṇḍaka, maura, maumaura, and blankets; many people guarding the saṅghārāmas; many carts and carriages; many wash pitchers, monk's staffs, and fans; many iron utensils, ceramic utensils, leather utensils, bamboo utensils, wooden utensils, and razors; and many robes, pātras, niṣīdanas, and needle cases. The monks did not know what to do and reported it to the Buddha. The Buddha said: "Whether with many acquaintances or without acquaintances, everything belongs to the saṅgha." (The Vinaya text is like this. Basing judgements on characteristics distinguishes thirteen items; now following the above list, each item is explained in full, all as listed below).
