4. Articles assisting the body. The root Vinaya states: if one is old and sick and incapable of walking on foot, one is permitted to make a hand-pulled cart, sedan chair, palanquin, or carriage; all may be supplied according to the circumstances. Except for leather ropes and hair ropes, one must not make monks carry or pull them. If walking on a road and fearing bites from venomous insects, one should hold and shake a khakkhara, or fill a tube with gravel, or split bamboo to make noise. If troubled by heat, one is permitted to make various kinds of parasols to shade oneself, or make large fans, swivel-joint fans, small fans, and the like. Furthermore, ruyi-shaped spittoons are permitted. The details are as in the two sections on miscellaneous dwelling matters in the Dharmaguptaka [Vinaya].
