1.22

《智度論》云：「外道是他法故，來則自坐。白衣如客法故，命之令坐。一切出家五眾，身心屬佛，故立不坐。若得道羅漢，如舍利弗等，皆坐聽法。三果已下，竝不聽坐，以所作未辦，結賊未破故。」

The Da zhidu lun says: “Because non-Buddhists belong to another teaching, when they arrive they sit of their own accord. Because white-robed laity follow the etiquette of guests, they are told to sit. As for all the five groups of renunciants, because their bodies and minds belong to the Buddha, they stand and do not sit. If they are arhats who have attained the Way, such as Śāriputra and others, they all sit to listen to the Dharma. Those of the three fruits and below are not permitted to sit at all, because what had to be done is not yet accomplished and the thieves of the defilements are not yet destroyed.”
