When a rat enters a horn, it reaches an absolute dead end—whither else could it turn? Names invoke words to reveal reality—the principle reaches its ultimate here. How much more so when the five defilements crisscross and the four mountains constantly oppress us—can one who remains complacently resigned to worldly affairs still be charmed by dim confusion? Therefore, the Great Sage, knowing the proper time, broadly converted and skillfully guided: he established the correct Three Jewels to guide that to which defiled consciousness takes refuge; he opened and illuminated the four seals to show confused beings how to be free from darkness. Surely, that the Dharma can abide for ten thousand years is a benefit due to the merit of taking refuge and veneration; that the spirit ascends to the Four Heavens certainly relies on the power of transmitting and propagating. As set forth at length in the sūtras of loving-kindness, how could this be an empty fabrication?
