However, the Three Jewels are the venerable objects of reverent audience, and therefore their forms and attributes are elucidated. (An ancient master's bequeathed teaching states:) 'How does a practitioner whole-heartedly take refuge with his life in the eternal dharmakāya? That is to say, the Tathāgata has perfected the ten powers, the four fearlessnesses, the five eyes, the six supernormal knowledges, the eighteen unshared dharmas, great loving-kindness and great compassion, the three foundations of mindfulness, and so forth; he possesses the knowledge of all modes, is the unsurpassed Tamer of Men, and his merits and wisdom are wondrous and pure, vast as the Dharma realm, ultimate as empty space, comforting the world, pervading and covering all, unobstructed and unhindered, without any discrimination. He cannot be known through [ordinary] cognition, nor recognized through consciousness; yet he is capable of manifesting the thirty-two major marks and the eighty secondary signs, constantly raising his right hand to console and welcome sentient beings, releasing great light to dispel the darkness of ignorance. Adorned with a hundred blessings and perfected in ten thousand virtues, he rains down the rain of ambrosia and turns the wheel of the correct Dharma, saving and benefiting sentient beings and bringing them out of the ocean of birth and death. For this reason he is called the Buddha, the most venerable among all the noble ones, the unsurpassed Dharma King; I now take refuge with my life.'
