「於後比丘披著袈裟多不齊整。諸離車子譏言：『無有威儀，所披衣服狀如婬女，猶如象鼻。』由此始制上安鉤紐，令以衣角達于左臂，置於腋下，不得令垂，如上過也。

"Afterward, when the monks wore their kāṣāyas, they were mostly untidy. The Licchavis ridiculed them, saying: 'They have no dignified comportment; the garments they wear look like those of courtesans, just like elephant trunks.' Because of this, he first instituted the placement of the hook and loop, ordering that the corner of the robe be brought to the left arm and placed under the armpit, not allowing it to hang down, so as to avoid the faults mentioned above."
