答曰：「魔若行惡，四天帝釋皆所不從。若下二天行諸善法，魔及魔子無如之何。此方僧勝，於大小乘曾無二見，悉皆奉之。西土不爾，諸小乘人獲大乘經，則投火中，小僧皆賣於北狄，耆者奪其命根，不可言述。今菩提大寺主，威猛象有八萬，僧戶數十萬，王征不得。遶塔之下，日有金帛，收已自納，厨內生魚，積成大聚，羊腔懸之，劇屠宰肆。然亦守護，不令惡鬼害之。」

He replied, saying: "If Māra acts with evil, neither the Four Heavenly Kings nor Śakra will obey him. If the lower two heavens practice wholesome dharmas, Māra and his minions can do nothing to them. The monks of this realm are superior: regarding the Mahāyāna and Hīnayāna, they never hold conflicting views, but venerate them both. In the Western Land it is not so: when the Hīnayāna followers obtain Mahāyāna sūtras, they throw them into the fire; junior monks are all sold to the northern Di barbarians, and elderly monks have their life-faculties taken—it is beyond description. Nowadays, the abbot of the Mahābodhi Monastery possesses eighty thousand fierce elephants and hundreds of thousands of monastic tenant households, which the king cannot conscript. Beneath the circumambulated stūpa, gold and silk are offered daily, and after collecting them he keeps them for himself; in the kitchen, live fish are piled into huge heaps, and sheep carcasses are hung up, worse than in a slaughterhouse. Yet we still protect him, not letting evil ghosts harm him."
