1.37

答云。魔若行惡。四天帝釋皆所不從。若下二天行諸善法。魔及魔女無如之何。此方僧勝。於大小乘曾無二見。悉皆奉之。西土不爾。諸小乘人獲大乘經則投火中。小僧賣於北狄。老者奪其命根。不可言述。今菩提大寺。寺主威猛。象有八萬。僧戶數千萬。王征不得。遶塔之下日有金帛。收已自納。厨內生魚頭積成大聚。羊腔懸之劇於屠肆。然亦守護。不令惡鬼害之。

He replied: "If Māra commits evil, the Four Heavenly Kings and Śakra will not follow him. If the lower two heavens practice wholesome dharmas, Māra and Māra's daughters can do nothing against them. The monks of this land are superior: they have no dual view regarding the Mahāyāna and Hīnayāna, and revere them both. In the Western lands it is not so: when followers of the Hīnayāna obtain Mahāyāna sūtras, they throw them into the fire; junior monks are sold to the northern barbarians, and the elderly have their life-faculty severed, which is unspeakable. Now at the Mahābodhi Temple, the abbot is fierce and forceful; he possesses eighty thousand elephants, and tens of millions of monastic households. The king cannot conscript them. Beneath the circumambulated stūpa, there is gold and silk every day, which he collects and takes for himself. In the kitchen, fresh fish heads pile up into huge mounds, and sheep carcasses hang worse than in a butcher's market. Yet we still guard and protect him, not letting evil ghosts harm him."
